Instructor Bios

Fahlon Bland
Originally from Errington, Fahlon got her start teaching at the Errington World Music Youth Camp and leading a youth performance group, Kumbana Marimba. After becoming a teacher in the Penticton School District, she began incorporating marimbas into her music classes. We welcome Fahlon back to where her music career began to lead a special workshop on playing Celtic music on marimba.

Robin Layne
A master marimbist based in Vancouver, Robin teaches percussion at the Sarah MacLachlan School of Music and tours with bands Locarno and Robin Layne and the Rhythm Makers. Robin is also an accomplished percussionist and is in demand as a workshop leader. Robin's session will focus on Latin-style marimba music.

Anna Lyman
Anna is a vocalist and ukulele specialist who teaches at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, leads community ukulele classes, and has organized ukulele festivals on Vancouver Island. Her workshop will be for beginner and intermediate level players. Because of her Mexican heritage, Anna will teach a song from her home country as well as Hawaiian tunes.

Maninho Costa
From Brazil and now living in Qualicum Beach, Mestre Maninho Costa is a carioca (a Brazilian from Rio de Janeiro) who grew up playing in the samba school baterias. Maninho will share his authentic Brazilian percussion instruments for a workshop on Batucada Samba. You'll get to know the instruments that make up a bateria de escola de samba (samba school drum group), its rhythms and arrangements, tuning and positions.
