The Southern Residents are a 7-piece Canadian folk and bluegrass group based in Victoria. Formed by singer-songwriter Tom Taylor and multi-instrumentalist Adrian Dolan, the band features an ensemble of local musicians and received a Juno Award nomination for their acclaimed debut album, Folk Signals. If you’re a fan of traditional folk music, this is an important album. Right from the opening song, “Devyn Gale”, there are haunting and timeless elements working together to create a wonderful sound.

“While it’s definitely a Canadian folk album, with heavy old-time American influences, there are aspects to the song writing and Tom’s vocal delivery that defy simple categorization,” says Dolan. “There’s a driving rock n roll energy, some gut-wrenching ballads, some instrumental shredding and crafty harmonies for the Bluegrassers, as well as poignant and timely lyrics for the song folks. I think it’s an album with a lot of authenticity, and unique appeal.”

The band's lineup is a British Columbia supergroup, blending rich vocal harmonies with traditional instruments like the fiddle, banjo, and Dobro. With Tom Taylor on acoustic guitar and vocals and Adrian Dolan playing the fiddle and mandolin, the lineup also includes Scott White on bass from Vancouver Island’s renowned The Bills; Jeanne Tolmie of The Luckies, adding rich vocal harmonies; and Shanti Bremer from The Sweet Lowdown, whose banjo adds a traditional bluegrass touch. Victoria’s Daniel Lapp, an acclaimed fiddler and multi-instrumentalist, brings his talents to the twin fiddle tunes, while David Hughes of She Stole My Beer and The Radio Grande plays the Dobro.

Their music explores socially and environmentally conscious themes while memorializing local history alongside uplifting, narrative-driven storytelling.
