Adventures in Music (kids 8-12)

The Errington Hall is offering a new summer program for musically adventurous youth aged 8 to 12 .The Music Adventure Camp provides an opportunity for kids who are already in music lessons or a band program to acquire exciting new skills in collaboration, composition, improvisation, arrangement and performance. Kids with no musical training are also welcome to join. An assortment of percussion instruments, ukuleles and marimbas will be provided for participants without instruments (and of course everybody can sing!)

The camp runs from August 11 to the 15th from 10:00am till noon each day, offering ten hours of mentored creative, collaborative self-expression through music. On Saturday, August 16 the youth will have an opportunity to showcase their original music for an enthusiastic audience on the outdoor stage during Errington's Hi Neighbour Day.

Leaders for the camp are multi-instrumentalists Kerri Coombs and Jill Russell, who each have decades of experience playing, composing, performing, collaborating and teaching music to students of all ages.

Registration for the week-long day camp only costs $50, thanks to funding received through the Oceanside Recreation Services Grant Program.

About the Instructors

Kerri Coombs

Kerri was born in Ottawa and raised in Calgary. She lived and performed in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, the United Kingdom and Ireland before settling in Parksville. As a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, she’s played with over a dozen musical collaborations in venues around the world. She’s produced several concerts, concert series, and festivals, and shared her enthusiasm and unique approach to self-directed learning with students of all ages in a variety of styles. Kerri’s the proprietor of FireDance Media, the president of the Islands Celtic Festival Society, and the creator of the BC Folk Song Project.

Jill Russell

Jill is a flutist/multi-instrumentalist living in Qualicum Beach. She completed a Music and Education degree at Western Washington University where she focused on Jazz Studies. Jill spent six years touring Western Canada with Brazilian musician Celso Machado, playing over six hundred shows and recording a duo album entitled “Musica do Brasil”. In 1999 Jill recorded her own CD, “Check the Beans”, featuring some of Brazil’s finest musicians. Since 2001 Jill Russell has fronted ‘Corcovado’, a Brazilian jazz band that has performed at The Vancouver Jazz Festival, the Dragon Boat festival, the Harmony Arts Festival, and played with Celso Machado at numerous Children’s Festivals.
