Seniors Marimba Classes

September 25 – November 27 (10 classes)

Session 1: 2:00 – 3:00pm (Beginner)

Session 2: 3:30 – 4:30pm (Experienced)

Thursdays is Marimba Day at the Errington Hall as seniors take over the space in the afternoons for a Beginners’ Class at 2:00pm or the class for more experienced players at 3:30pm. Emphasis is on having fun while learning traditional Zimbabwean songs in ensemble. Classes are capped at 10. A knowledge of music notation isn’t required as the songs will be taught orally through demonstration and repetition. As a bonus, marimbas may be available for rent first come, first served courtesy of the Arrowsmith Community Recreation Association. About the Instructors

Ted Wright

Ted Wright's love for Zimbabwean music began with Victoria's Marimba Muzuva in 1993. He has been a teacher of marimba, mbira, chipendani and gumboot dancing for many years, and has travelled to Zimbabwe several times, studying and performing with many of Zimbabwe's top traditional musicians. In addition to Muzuva, his musical projects have included the world beat improvisational ensemble Spirit Gate, mbira quartet Choto, and Zimbabwean roots dance bands Zimfusion and Jambanja. Ted organizes the biennial Zimbabwean music/dance gathering Nhemamusasa North, and teaches workshops, school groups, and ongoing classes as director of Bopoma on Vancouver Island.

Jill Russell – Assistant

Jill is a flutist/multi-instrumentalist living in Qualicum Beach. She completed a Music and Education degree at Western Washington University where she focused on Jazz Studies. Jill spent six years touring Western Canada with Brazilian musician Celso Machado, playing over six hundred shows and recording a duo album entitled “Musica do Brasil”. In 1999 Jill recorded her own CD, “Check the Beans”, featuring some of Brazil’s finest musicians. Since 2001 Jill Russell has fronted ‘Corcovado’, a Brazilian jazz band that has performed at The Vancouver Jazz Festival, the Dragon Boat festival, the Harmony Arts Festival, and played with Celso Machado at numerous Children’s Festivals.
