World Music Summer Program

Journey into Rhythm

August 12-15, 2024 Course

The Errington Hall’s world music summer program is back, but with a difference – it’s now intergenerational!

Although we can’t run a full-day camp this year because the Errington Hall is closed over the summer for seismic upgrades, we are still able to offer “Journey into Rhythm”, a unique program that will take place in the Old Fire Hall next to the main hall. Vancouver musician and educator Robin Layne will be in residence to teach African and Latin-inspired songs and rhythms to three groups.

There will be two classes for elders age 55+, each accompanied by a child age 8 and up, and one class for youth only, age 12 and up. All classes will be using our Zimbabwean style hand-built soprano, tenor, baritone, and bass marimbas and locally crafted djembe style drums.

The first intergenerational group will start the day at 9:30-10:30am followed by the youth class from 10:45am-12:00pm. The second intergenerational group will be from 12:30 to 1:30pm.

Numbers are limited to four pairs of elders/children in each of the two intergenerational groups for a total of 16 participants. The youth group has up to eight participants.

Because the music is played in ensemble, we ask that you attend all four sessions from Monday to Thursday to support your fellow musicians in learning and playing the songs together.

This year we unfortunately won’t be able to schedule a recital to end the program as the main hall may still be closed.

The registration form can be downloaded here. We’ll be confirming attendance in the order we receive the completed forms and fee payment.

The performance group Zazu and an original youth musical production, Allondra’s Journey, were two successful projects that resulted from the camp. Valerie looks forward to reviving and enhancing the camp through “Journey into Rhythm” as an annual collaborative project of the Errington War Memorial Hall Association and the World Rhythms for Youth Society.
